A new generation of mid-sized aircraft with longer flight ranges is making it possible for airlines to serve medium- and long-haul markets worldwide that otherwise would not have enough demand to support large aircraft.
Airlines are using these planes for more non-stop services, longer low-cost flights, and even roomier transatlantic crossings.
It’s an evolution of technology rather than a revolution: These new services won’t by themselves make unprofitable airlines profitable or kill off airports. But the new aircraft, if used intelligently, could provide a welcome competitive tool for airlines. At the same time, hub airports will need to focus more intensively on customer-centered innovation as the technology boosts traffic and service levels at secondary and regional airports.
