Energy sustainability is based on three core dimensions — energy security, social equity, and environmental impact mitigation — creating a trilemma for countries and policy makers. A number of factors can affect a country’s balance on the trilemma, including resource endowment, economic prosperity, standards of living, technological development, and government and institutional support. The interactive chart below, based on data from a World Energy Council and Oliver Wyman report, shows how perfect alignment in all three dimensions is a goal no country has yet achieved.
