A spinal cord injury can happen in the blink of an eye, to anyone — causing not only mobility loss but also a loss of confidence, independence, and freedom. SpinalCure is the leading charity funding spinal cord injury research in Australia, with the sole aim of finding a cure.
SpinalCure funds clinical research, works with government to increase investment, facilitates research sharing between scientists. As part of this important work, SpinalCure had recently raised significant funds and introduced neurostimulation research to Australia. Recognizing the need for a clear direction, SpinalCure engaged Oliver Wyman to help clarify its overall vision and co-create a five-year strategy and business plan to ensure its business model was fit for purpose given these developments.
SpinalCure is an incredible organization that humbled and inspired us every day with the team’s persistent focus on how their actions help those suffering from spinal cord injuries. Our strategic skillset was a good match and we helped them refine several open questions on their strategy and roadmapJulian Granger-Bevan, Partner, Oliver Wyman
We worked closely with the SpinalCure team to thoroughly assess the current state of organizations in its industry. Our objective was to identify areas where SpinalCure could add the most value, set its vision and strategic priorities, and develop a detailed implementation plan. This involved a comprehensive evaluation of the organization’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, ensuring that the strategy would be both practical and impactful.
The aim of the project was to enable SpinalCure to be clear on its role in the industry and to determine which initiatives and resources to prioritize in the future. By having a practical plan in place, SpinalCure could implement necessary changes effectively. This clarity would not only streamline its operations but also enhance its ability to communicate its strategy to the board and potential donors.
This collaboration has enabled us to confidently move forward. As a result, we’ve made great progress in the next stage of our journey: we’ve hired the necessary people and are developing Australia’s first national roadmap to a cure for spinal cord injuryKathryn Borkovic, Chief Executive Officer, SpinalCure Australia
The outcome of our collaboration was significant. The project helped SpinalCure clarify its focus areas over the next five years, enabling the organization to present a clear and compelling vision to stakeholders. This strategic information also led to the hiring of new roles, aimed at increasing the effectiveness of its fundraising efforts. By strengthening the team, SpinalCure is better positioned to raise funds and drive forward its mission to find a cure for spinal cord injuries.
Supporting SpinalCure to maximize its impact in the journey to a cure for spinal cord injury was incredibly rewarding. Seeing the team’s passion for the cause, hearing people’s real-life experiences, and being able to bring our knowledge and strategy expertise to the engagement was a privilegeAmy McIlwraith, Associate, Oliver Wyman
