Singapore International Energy Week

Energy Transition Towards A Net-Zero World

Location: Singapore Date: October 23—27, 2023

Overview

The Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW), organized by the Singapore Energy Market Authority (EMA), is an annual platform for energy professionals, policymakers, and commentators to share best practices and solutions within the global energy space. This year marked the 16th edition of SIEW, which carried the theme “Energy Transition Towards A Net-Zero World”.

The uncertain economic outlook, high energy prices, growing energy demand, and rising emissions continue to pose challenges to global efforts towards a net-zero future. A paradigm shift is needed to sustain the energy transition and galvanize international efforts to respond to the challenges of our time. Our energy systems must continue to evolve and remain adaptable – technological innovation and investments will be crucial to support the development of regional interconnectivity and the electrification of end-users. The infrastructure and resiliency of supply chains must also be strengthened to unlock the full potential of low-carbon alternatives such as hydrogen to manage energy demand in the longer-term.

As a lead up to COP28, SIEW 2023 provided a platform for international energy leaders to discuss pertinent energy transition issues.

Oliver Wyman was proud to be a Singapore-International Energy Agency (IEA) Forum panel sponsor.

SIEW 2022

The 15th edition of SIEW, themed “A Resilient and Sustainable Energy Future”, reflected how the global energy community has accelerated the pursuit of a greener future. Following the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), there was strong momentum for countries to do more to decarbonize their economies and ride the green wave to reduce emissions.

Asia, which accounts for almost half of the global energy demand, faces urgency to accelerate the deployment of renewables, fortify grid infrastructure, strengthen supply chain resilience of key fuels, and develop regional interconnections to enhance security while keeping electricity accessible and affordable. Massive investments into regional grid connections, green infrastructure, electrification, green financing, technologies and supply chains for hydrogen and carbon capture utilization, and storage would be needed to support the clean energy transition.

Oliver Wyman was a proud sponsor of the Singapore Energy Summit (SES) panel.

Mobilising Greener Financing for Energy Infrastructure
Presented by Oliver Wyman

This session addressed how greater sustainable private financing and growing corporate net zero commitments could come together to achieve low carbon goals earlier. Speakers shared their perspectives on facilitating green financing for energy infrastructure developments, including how these investments would lead to more renewable energy projects and grid renewals, and interconnections in the region.

Panelists:

  • Moderator: Abhi Bhuchar, head of Energy and Industrials, Asia Pacific, Oliver Wyman
  • Fahad Alajlan, president, King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Centre (KAPSARC)
