A Funding Strategy for Alaya's Project Kasibulan

A Sustainable Nationwide Initiative

Introduction

Ayala Corporation is one of the oldest and largest conglomerates in the Philippines with business interests in real estate, banking, telecommunications, water, power, industrial technologies, infrastructure, healthcare, and education. Over the years, Ayala has become a pioneer in integrating sustainability into business strategies in the Philippines.

Project Kasibulan started with Ayala's intention to mitigate its GHG Emission while contributing to the national re-greening project of the country. Going beyond tree-planting, Project Kasibulan is Ayala's group-wide, nationwide reforestation and forest protection initiative.

This large-scale, long-term conservation project aims to offset internal carbon emission, protect the environment and biodiversity, and support local community development. With the help of 186 volunteers, Project Kasibulan has planted 4,719 seedlings to date, covering about 2.4 hectares in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte, in the island of Luzon.

Scope

In 2018 Ayala Corporation engaged Oliver Wyman to create a funding strategy that would help Project Kasibulan meet its goals of generating a larger positive impact on the environment, contributing to climate change mitigation, and improving Filipino lives.

Kasibulan is symbolic of Ayala’s mission to contribute in the protection of the natural environment through reforestation, encourage people to care for the environment, and promote green jobs and ecopreneurship
Jose Teodoro K. Limcaoco, CFO, Chief Risk & Sustainability Officer, Ayala Corporation
We are very glad to have engaged Oliver Wyman. We gained more insights that will make our reforestation and forest protection initiative, Project Kasibulan, a success. The points they shared will guide us in giving a larger positive impact for both the environment and society. Thank you very much to the Oliver Wyman team!

Impact

At the time Oliver Wyman’s project was completed, Project Kasibulan was preparing its environmental study and applying for government approval. Oliver Wyman provided a structured framework and actionable approach for the Ayala Corporation to assess the sustainability of its project; Ayala continues to work with its partners to ensure the success of this 30-year initiative.

It’s a very rewarding experience to work on this important topic with Ayala Corporation. Unlike typical consulting projects, we travelled to Mindoro Island where areas are explored for expansion of Project Kasibulan, visited indigenous community, trekked in local mountains, and observed the local environment. We can really see how the outcome of our work and Ayala Corporation’s effort will make a difference to the environment and to the improved livelihood of local communities
