FT/Oliver Wyman Strategic Forum Adapting to a New World Order - Where Next for the GCC?

Location: Dubai, United Arab Emirates Date: Sep 28, 2017

Overview

Amidst the current international economic and political turmoil, GCC countries continue to have high aspirations to innovate, to diversify their GDP growth and workforce, and invest in infrastructure. On the broader global stage, as many traditional players step back and new entrants come to the fore, what role will GCC countries and businesses play, both regionally and globally? And where can the public and private sectors best devote their collaborative energies to secure and enhance the role of the region as a commercial hub and address continued and new challenges? Where Next for the GCC? The Financial Times and Oliver Wyman will bring together senior executives from a wide range of industries, as well as public sector agencies and government departments that work closely with these sectors to explore this question.

Within the GCC, increasing private sector participation (PSP) is one method for diversifying the economy and unleashing innovation and business transformation. The majority of GCC countries recognise the importance of PSP and have incorporated it in their national plans and are exploring opportunities for public–private partnerships (PPPs) and privatisation of government assets. How can the realities of low oil prices, continued concern with carbon, and the stresses on GCC economies be mitigated? What are the potential threats of digitisation? Do the benefits of privatisation outweigh the costs and what is the impact on the GCC’s employment challenge?

The invitation-only event will be chaired and moderated by Andrew England, MENA Editor, Financial Times. The forum will be held under the Chatham House rule.
