Abhi Bhuchar on Asia’s Nuclear Energy Surge

Asia is seeing renewed momentum in nuclear energy, led by rapid expansion in India and China, as governments seek more reliable and secure power sources amid geopolitical tensions and rising electricity demand.
Southeast Asian countries in ASEAN are now weighing their own nuclear ambitions as part of their long-term energy mix, resulting from concerns over energy security, decarbonization goals, and growing AI-driven power demand.
Abhi Bhuchar, Head of Energy and Natural Resources, Asia Pacific observed that nuclear energy lends itself to India’s “broad political and natural appetite to be more self-reliant and not aligned with any particular geopolitical force”.
He added that nuclear power “is very much back in the conversation” and interest levels in Asia were already rising before the Iran war broke out – due to regulatory curiosity and mature technologies, among other factors.
Abhi expressed hope that moving ahead, individual jurisdictions will see clean power as a means to “control their destiny", such that “sustainability does not become a long-term victim of the war”.
