Jim Schmidt On Automotive Labor Shortages

The United States is struggling to increase manufacturing productivity, especially in motor-vehicle manufacturing. This can be attributed to many factors, such as supply chain, regulations, or public infrastructure.

Jim Schmidt, Vice President in Oliver Wyman’s Automotive and Manufacturing Industries Practice, also brought another factor to light: the shortage of skilled workers.

"They find desirable candidates, they hire them, they train them, they don’t retain them,” said Jim,  “A lot of the younger workforce doesn’t want to do that type of work.”
