BBC News, City AM and The Independent: Duncan Brewer Comments On The Effects Of Brexit On Consumer Sentiment

Duncan Brewer, Retail Partner, spoke to BBC News, City AM and The Independent on the September Office for National Statistics (ONS) retail sales.

With moderate growth in spending at 0.6%, Duncan said: "Consumer sentiment is down and households are stripping back spending to essentials" due to a "looming no-deal Brexit".

"Looking ahead, it’s going to be really fascinating in in the run up to 31 October deadline to see if consumers pull forward their spend, to stockpile before Brexit, particularly as we are heading into peak trading season with the Christmas sales and Black Friday," he said.

"We know consumers pull forward their Christmas spend to Black Friday, the question is this year whether are they going to shift it into October, and make up for the dip in September.

"This is one year when we can forgive retailers for putting their Christmas displays out a little bit early."
