From leading our Health and Life Sciences Practice to rejoining Oliver Wyman, Sumit Sharma’s journey reflects his commitment to collaborative teamwork and professional growth. Based in Dubai, Sumit shares his insights as a returning partner on why he decided to come back and the importance of never assuming you’re the smartest person in the room.

Tell us about your first stint at Oliver Wyman.

I first joined Oliver Wyman as a partner in 2016, where I spent five years between the Singapore and London offices leading our Health and Life Sciences Practice across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific. This role allowed me to work on transformative projects and collaborate with some of the brightest minds in the industry.

What prompted your decision to leave?

In pursuit of new challenges and opportunities, I decided to join another consulting firm, which offered me fresh perspectives and the opportunity to further hone my leadership skills. However, after nearly three years, I found myself reflecting on what truly mattered to me in my professional journey. I realized I wanted to return to Oliver Wyman. Now, I’m leading the Health and Life Sciences Practice in India, the Middle East, and Africa — our fastest-growing region globally.

Why did you want to come back?

Our CEO, Nick Studer, and the leadership team is exceptionally engaged, and their dedication and strategic direction are inspiring. I see significant growth opportunities across all regions, and I wanted to be part of that exciting journey.

Oliver Wyman has a unique, human-centric environment that emphasizes collaboration and a collegiate atmosphere, which I deeply value
Sumit Sharma, Partner and returning alumni

How has your reintegration been since returning?

I’m absolutely delighted to be back! I already know many people across various practice teams and geographies, and I kept in touch with colleagues while I was away. That familiarity has made the transition seamless.

What changes have you noticed at Oliver Wyman since your return?

Our brand has grown and gained considerable recognition in the market. This is a testament to the quality of work and the impact we’ve had on our clients’ businesses. Despite this growth, our core culture remains intact. The leadership has worked hard to preserve the supportive and collaborative environment that I value.

Do you believe it’s possible for a large corporation to retain its human touch?

It’s certainly possible with intentional effort and strategies. A leadership that prioritizes empathy, transparency, and open communication can set the tone for the entire organization.

What learnings have you brought back to Oliver Wyman?

A key learning is the importance of free thinking – encouraging our teams to be bold and creative, take calculated risks, and push the boundaries to deliver innovative solutions for our clients. I’m here to offer the high-trust environment required for this purpose.

What advice would you give to the next generation of consultants?

Consulting is a dynamic and ever-evolving industry. To stay ahead, don’t assume you’re the smartest in the room and work to continuously develop your skills and knowledge. Relationships and reputation are also key so approach every situation with humility and build your network of colleagues and peers based on trust. Our Alumni Network is a fantastic resource for this.
