Why Oliver Wyman?Cliché as it sounds, it was the people. The people here are smart and intelligent but don’t make that their distinguishing factor. It is more that the people are likeable and they’re clever. They aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves and get dirty with the client. Oliver Wyman isn’t just about presenting a strategy (although we do a lot of strategy work) but we also help to implement recommendations and see them through.
When I originally joined, I had planned to do 1-2 years of consulting, go back to business school and then figure out what I wanted to do as a “career.” Once I got here, plans changed and I decided that this was something I wanted to do longer-term. The great thing about Oliver Wyman is you don’t have to necessarily go back to business school in order to progress...something I definitely took advantage of.
Milestones & MentorsDuring one of my projects, I took over as interim manager for an operations department with an airline. It was one of the most rewarding experiences for me as it isn’t always the case that we consultants get to do line roles. This opportunity really added to my experience. People can’t say that consultants don’t roll up their sleeves to get the job done! Another very interesting project early in my career was for a non-profit organization. I worked out a vaccine pricing model which helped the client understand the economics related to that particular vaccine. In turn, the client subsequently invested another $100 million in the vaccine.
I have had a number of different mentors over the years. Some have been through our formal advisor process and some have been through more informal channels (e.g. the Partner on my project). They have been tremendous in guiding some of my decisions and providing advice on what factors I should consider. For example, when I transferred to the UK from Dallas, one of my mentors outlined the pros and cons and also gave me his point of view based on a similar situation he went through.
Outside of Client WorkI’m involved in a few activities outside of client work including the London office Social Committee co-chair, MTE London Talent Manager and an active member in our employee resource group, GLOW (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender & Allies at Oliver Wyman). With an office of over 600 people, there is always something social going on. Since taking over as co-chair, we have diversified the events to ensure we are being more inclusive. This has included additional family events, theatre trips, and sporting events. We are always looking for new ways to get people involved! As the Talent Manager for my practice group, I’m heavily involved with onboarding new staff and the review process. This includes ensuring that our people are doing well.
When I started at the firm, GLOW didn’t exist as a formal support network for the LGBT community. Now it is a well-established group with sponsorship from the senior leadership. It’s been amazing to see the progression of GLOW in the company since I joined. In transferring to the UK, I have helped it gain presence in the London office. In parallel, I’ve been working with Human Capital to review our parental leave policies in light of my circumstances as my partner and I go through the surrogacy process.
