The Tom Main Health Innovation Mentorship is an annual mentoring program that provides health industry entrepreneurs with business and leadership guidance as they seek to drive impact. The Mentorship was created in honor of its namesake, Tom Main. Among his many professional roles, including Founder and Leader of the Oliver Wyman Health Innovation Center, Tom was a passionate mentor – to entrepreneurs leading new startups, to well-established executives, and to anyone in between. The Mentorship models Tom’s innate behavior and desire to support those who sought to transform the health industry in pursuit of better health and optimal value. Through the Mentorship, we aspire to carry on Tom’s mission to support those with vision, passion, and determination in transforming the health industry.
A Collaborative, Community-Based Approach to Impact
Each year, we kick off the annual Mentorship selection process by asking our nominating committee – which includes thought leaders and partners from the industry’s leading venture capital firms – to nominate a truly passionate, mission-oriented CEO of a high potential start-up. We ask each nominee to share their story and their ambitions for impact. After extensive review, discussion, and deliberation, our internal selection committee determines three finalists who move onto the final Pitch Day. On Pitch Day, a panel of judges comprised of Oliver Wyman Partners, OWHIC Leaders Alliance members, and the outgoing mentee, declare a winner.
The Mentorship Experience
A dedicated duo of senior mentors from the Oliver Wyman Health and Life Sciences practice supports the mentee with addressing business-specific challenges, as well as navigating the dynamics of effective leadership. The mentors provide an honest, objective view of the business, hold the mentee accountable, and provide guidance based on their collective knowledge and experience. The mentors are also able to leverage their networks, bringing in Oliver Wyman and Marsh colleagues as needed.
