Paul is a senior advisor in our Energy and Natural Resources practice, where he brings more than three decades of global oil and gas market experience to help clients understand market shifts and make informed strategic decisions.

As the founder of Sankey Research, Paul is considered one of the most influential voices on oil markets among institutional investors, corporate leaders, and financial media, combining rigorous, data-driven analysis with clear storytelling and an independent, often contrarian, perspective.

Paul’s research approach brings together market structure, corporate strategy, and commodity fundamentals to identify inflection points early and frame them clearly for decision makers. His work is often recognized for anticipating shifts in crude quality differentials, capital cycle discipline, and the interplay between policy, geopolitics, and investment outcomes.

Previously, Paul held research roles at leading energy and financial institutions. At Wood Mackenzie, he developed early thought leadership on the emerging global liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade. He later moved to New York to join Deutsche Bank’s energy equity research team, where he covered major oil and refining companies. He was ranked No. 1 by Institutional Investor for three consecutive years before joining Wolfe Research in 2013 and Mizuho in 2018.

Paul is a recognized commentator on global energy markets, with expertise spanning oil prices, geopolitics, refining, exploration and production, and industry strategy. He publishes energy market research and hosts calls and conferences focused on global energy and commodities.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics and history from the University of Manchester. Outside of work, Paul enjoys exploring global energy history, markets, and cultures.
