Cloud Product Development in 2018: Rapid, Agile Transformative

An Event from Google Cloud, Weaveworks and Oliver Wyman

Date: Mar 20, 2018

Overview

Hosted by Oliver Wyman and featuring hands-on innovations from Google, Weaveworks, and Accel Partners, this event provided an opportunity to learn about:

  • Improving customer experience in real time using DevOps
  • Changing the rules of cloud adoption with Kubernetes in Google
  • Combining business and technical staff into fast moving digital teams
  • Achieving practical impact with machine learning and AI in 2018

Agenda

The event and the lively discussion served everyone well to update their knowledge on agile product development  using cloud technologies.

Adrian Colyer opened the presentation highlighting changes in the development process, where everything becomes more granular (example micro services), and proceeds in faster cycles (example number  of releases per day). This is enabled by rising levels of abstraction in IT development, and enables teams to move fast  and learn things. Whilst small startups have an advantage in speed, large enterprises usually have the benefit of larger data pools. According to recent research, more data the most significant driver to optimize learning algorithms.

Uwe Lambrette shed light on six critical aspects to change the internal cloud conversation into the right direction. It is key to embrace innovation, and not just to look at cost to motivate a cloud deployment. To maximise benefits,  partner closely with cloud vendors to reap benefits from their investments and offers. Scale out the resulting platforms, and evolve your organization and people to serve projects, a main element is to break silos. In migrations, look for business value and keep in mind that some legacy may stay. Finally, look at security as an enabler for change from the start.

Alexis Richardson linked the strategy to execution, explaining the 5Ps which need to be in place for agile development. Have the right programmers, remember a single bright mind can have amazing impact. Use a well-structured  and ideally fully scripted development process, and rely as much as possible on single platforms. Deploy this development capability against the right priorities, and continuously eliminate your pain points. Weaveworks is enabling organizations to rapidly focus on the 5 Ps.

After Sufyaan Kazi highlighted the scale, automation, and integration of their global cloud platform Googler David Aronchik went on to explain kubeflow, an integrated platform for machine learning. Benefits are the portability, when launched,  Kubeflow can be seamlessly used on stand-alone laptops as well as a public cloud platform. This simplifies development,  and nicely reflected the earlier points on abstraction, platforms and re-using investments made.

Dan Ciruli came next and explained Istios, a container meshing tool. Istios helps to maintain an overview over large scale container platforms and provides a level of monitoring and management of large-scale container platforms.

The last presentation by Maya Kaczorowski  thoroughly discussed container security, current limitations as well as opportunities. Of course, containers require other security platforms to provide segmentation and control in critical applications.
