The Economist: Wai-Chan Chan On Online Retailers In China

Oliver Wyman partner, Wai-chan Chan, was quoted in a story titled, “Online retailers go offline in China” in the Economist.

The article discusses how the two biggest internet firms in China are facing an offline battlefront as Chinese consumers still prefer to buy their groceries at brick-and-mortar stores. The five largest supermarkets in China control 27 percent of the business, in comparison to 78 percent in Britain. Wai-chan Chan expects a shake-out in the distribution sector, as the two giants become middlemen for brands and physical stores. Even if they end up not owning a dominant chain of stores, ultimately, says Chan, the will “own the customer.”
