Airline Economic Analysis 2011

Each year, Oliver Wyman prepares an Airline Economic Analysis that is released at the Raymond James Global Airline Conference.

In the report, select carriers are reviewed across a variety of different metrics, including:

  • CASM / RASM comparisons.
  • Long-term CASM trends.
  • Stage length adjusted CASM.
  • CASM comparisons for similar aircraft (narrowbody, widebody, and regional jets).
  • Fuel prices.
  • Unit revenue and changes in revenue composition over time.
  • Ancillary revenue: Baggage and cancellation fees.
  • Capacity discipline and its effect on prices.

The 2011 report, which analyzes airline statistics in the year through September 2010, identifies several trends playing out across the United States aviation industry. These include a narrowing CASM gap between the value carriers and the network carriers, and solid growth in RASM for both kinds of carriers, strongly driven by capacity discipline.

In conjunction with the latest report, Oliver Wyman's PlaneStats.com has also launched the Airline Performance Comparisons tool, which allows users to dynamically view airline statistics for specific carriers, including passenger yield, passenger load factor, RASM, and CASM data for the current period.
