Ana Carla Abrão Costa is a partner in our Finance and Risk and Public Policy Practices, based in São Paulo. She has been working in the financial industry all her life, with a track record of deep and recognized experience in financial services and the public sector. Ana Carla is focused on topics related to risk control, credit, banking spread, compliance and retail, taxation, and tax-related issues

Relevant experience

  • PhD in Economics from the University of São Paulo, laureate with the two major prizes for academic research in Brazil at the time
  • Extensive academic production in the areas of credit markets, bank runs, banking credit, credit deepening, real estate credit market, and banking spreads
  • Consultant at the Deposit Insurance System (FGC) in Brazil, supporting the discussion of the design of an eventual migration from a pure paybox system to a wider role
  • Economist at the Central Bank of Brazil, served as a researcher at  the Research Department of Banking Economics, responsible for developing a new methodology of decomposition and measurement of banking spreads in Brazil
  • Supported the studies of the Microeconomic Reform Agenda of the Ministry of Finance, focused on institutional improvements for fostering credit markets in Brazil such as Insolvency Law; Credit information bureaus, secured loans regulation, etc
  • Chief Economist at Tendências – Economic Consulting, leading a team of high-end economists
  • Head of Modeling & Research/Credit Risk, and then Head of Risk Management & Capital Allocation at Itaú Unibanco, responsible for the development and monitoring of the whole set of credit rating models for retail and wholesale and for implementing Basel 2 compliance in Itau
  • Finance Secretary of the State of Goiás, Brazil, leading the restructuring of the fiscal conditions and implementing major efficiency gains, tax collection, and e-government initiatives.
