Maintenance benchmarking for an iron ore railroad in Australia

Maintenance benchmarking: Oliver Wyman reviewed the track maintenance practices of an iron ore railroad in Australia. Oliver Wyman assisted the Track Maintenance Section in developing an understanding of its strengths and weaknesses that would enable it to meet planned increases in total tons hauled over the next 5-7 years, achieve world-class standards in track maintenance, lower costs, and increase the useful lives of track structure components. Oliver Wyman assessed the critical performance drivers for track maintenance and compared the company’s practices with best practices from other heavy haul operations worldwide. Oliver Wyman also determined the unit costs of track maintenance activities and, using a sophisticated infrastructure planning model, modeled the impact of forecast increases in tonnage on track maintenance, costs and productivity, and component life cycles.
