Redefining leadership requirements to enable a turnaround

To position itself as a world-class service organization, an airline emerging from bankruptcy needed to establish, in the words of the CEO, “a dramatically different set of leadership expectations.”

The CEO was counting on his senior team to lead a transformation that would enable the company to be more innovative, adaptable, and collaborative. The first step was to identify leadership competencies that would make this happen. We also built a customized assessment tool and process, and helped find creative ways to maximize the developmental benefits of activities that people were already doing.  The CEO and his direct reports were assessed first, which sent a strong signal about their dedication to the process and change.

A commitment to executive development remains strong. Talent reviews regularly look at overall executive bench strength and plans for maximizing individual potential.  Funding for this initiative has been maintained in the face of radical cost-cutting because the CEO is convinced that leadership renewal is crucial to implementing the company’s new strategy for success.
