Building for the future through talent management

Increasing concern in energy sector boardrooms over executive talent shortages prompted the CEO of a power generation company to look for an in-depth understanding of the internal talent available to lead the company into the future – and what it would take to prepare these leaders to step into CEO or officer roles.

We designed a rigorous and practical assessment and development process to overcome reluctance and engage candidates. Our multi-faceted assessment process combined 360-feedback and leadership risk factor surveys with opportunities for leaders to document career achievements and goals and share their thoughts on the company’s strategy. An interactive assessment center featured videotaped case study simulations and panel interviews.

Despite initial skepticism, candidates and their leaders found the process credible and meaningful. The board, CEO, and head of human resources are confident they have enough candidates for CEO and other executive roles, and the leaders considered likely to be "ready soon" have lived up to expectations.
