From an outside-in perspective, all consultancies appear to be the same: bright people, long hours, interesting and challenging work. Therefore, in deciding which consulting company to work for, people mattered most to me. During my interviews at Oliver Wyman I was particularly impressed by the relaxed atmosphere. Although I had to solve a number of the typical consulting-like case studies I felt that a core element of the recruitment process at Oliver Wyman was to ensure a personal fit. Now that I interview candidates myself I can confirm that my first thoughts about our recruiting process couldn’t have been more correct and I still truly enjoy working here.
Two years ago Zurich was one of the smallest Oliver Wyman offices. In the mean time we’ve been growing very quickly. We have hired numerous new consultants but we have also had a number of Oliver Wyman staff relocating to Zurich. Besides the obvious advantages of Zurich (reasonable tax rates, lake Zurich, mountains etc.) we’ve also internally promoted our office. Amongst other things, a colleague and I started to organize the OW skiing weekend three years ago. This event has now become a “OW institution” with 50-60 attendees each year. Although organizing such an event besides the regular project work is very time consuming and challenging we are both very happy to contribute to the culture in general and the Zurich office culture in particular. It is delightful to see these happy skiers outside the office or have drinks with colleagues during summer events and weekly happy hours.
Whilst at university I used to play a lot of tennis. When I first started to work at Oliver Wyman it was relatively hard for me to be deprived of the option to regularly play tennis on a sunny afternoon. I was also frustrated by the fact that it was very hard to keep up my original level. In the mean time, however, I’ve learned to more enjoy than purely “fight” my matches and to use my spare time on the tennis court to re-energize and to freshen up my mind.
