The CEO and senior leaders of a global high-technology company facing major new competitive threats discovered they had disparate views of their company’s long-term strategy and plans for achieving it. Their differences, publicly exposed in a top business publication, revealed to the world their acute lack of consensus and clarity.
We designed a research approach to pinpoint discrepancies that could weaken the firm’s competitiveness: we assessed each executive’s press interview and conducted an alignment analysis based on their comments; reviewed market analysts’ reports and published articles on the company; and examined key data on competitors.
Our robust, impartial assessment became a turning point for the team. We graphically showed that their understanding of the firm’s strategy varied drastically, and that they didn’t understand its actual capabilities. And our composite snapshot of leadership views and competitive analysis provided a framework for discussing and forging a clear path for the company.
