The Formula Of Success For Banks In Italy

Italian banks have spent the past 10 years recovering from the financial crisis, but its legacy continues to weigh on them: profitability is generally low and difficult to sustain in the long term, and the NPL stock is still relevant. Moreover, compared to European banks, Italian institutions are smaller and have fallen behind in the digitalization process.

This situation, combined with the dual threat of a potential global and local crisis, and large technology firms’ increasing interest in financial services, means it is a challenging time for Italian banks.

But it’s not too late to relaunch the Italian banking industry. Increasing size through mergers is how banks will achieve the critical Mass necessary to create economies of scale and sustain the digital investment race. And there is still room for small- and medium-size institutions, as long as they act quickly and bravely, replicating the performance champions’ recipe: clear strategic focus, strong corporate culture, and agile and reactive organization. Our research shows that growing Mass, and Accelerating performance through increased agility, will be the drivers for restoring growth and creating value in the future - the combination of Mass and Acceleration will create Force.
