A National Imperative

Joining forces to strengthen human services in America

America’s social services sector—essential to vibrant communities where people live safely, have access to jobs and healthcare, and benefit from high-performing schools—is experiencing serious financial stress that is compromising its ability to adequately help people reach their full potential.

Oliver Wyman, the Alliance for Strong Families and Communities (Alliance) and the American Public Human Services Association (APHSA) developed a report which examines the opportunities to help ensure the sector’s financial health and success.

The report, titled “A National Imperative: Joining Forces to Strenghten Human Services in America" is a collaborative effort by the Alliance, APHSA, Oliver Wyman, a global management consulting firm and SeaChange Capital, a nonprofit merchant bank. The Kresge Foundation and Ballmer Group Philanthropy are providing financial support.

Oliver Wyman partnered with three organizations to bring this report together: SeaChange Capital Markets, The Alliance for Strong Families and Communities, and The Association Public Human Services Agencies in America. For nearly a year Oliver Wyman conducted research in order to identify ways in which the financial strength of human services nonprofits (or Community Based Organizations) can be improved. The Human Ecosystem is important in many areas such as with the aging population, the opioid crisis, the criminal justice system, and education. From this paper it is our hope that tangible action on the ground will take place.
