Food retail has been more immune to disruption from online players than other retail sectors, but this is increasingly changing.

Customers who initially trialed online grocers, rated them as having a poorer offer at a higher price point than traditional grocers, and as a result they did not shift their shopping away from established brick-and-mortar grocers.

This is no longer the case. Our Consumer Perception Mapping survey shows that online grocers like AmazonFresh have been able to improve their position to present customers with an offer that is becoming competitive with established grocers. To defend their market share from rising threats from online grocers, we recommend established grocers actively invest to keep their customers’ fresh spend.
