The Guardian And BBC: UK Shoppers Increase Spending Despite Brexit Uncertainty

British consumers appear to have evaded mounting fears over Brexit by raising their spending in February, as unseasonably warm weather tempted shoppers to the high street. The Office for National Statistics noted that sales volumes rose by 0.4% last month compared to January.

Explaining the trend, Duncan Brewer, retail partner, said: “The increase in February sales is likely to be down to one of two things. Firstly, the uncertainty around Brexit – consumers are stockpiling for fear of price increases further down the line.

“Secondly the unseasonably warm February has encouraged consumers to prepare for the Spring and Summer months ahead, purchasing things like barbecues, garden tools and summer clothing.”

Duncan’s comments were published in BBC Business Live and The Guardian.
