Iconic magazine: De-risked and optimized a major format redesign/relaunch
One of the world’s best-known and most established magazines was facing a declining subscriber base and disappointing newsstand sales. The publisher was considering a major format redesign and magazine relaunch to appeal to a wider and younger audience but needed to de-risk the revolutionary relaunch and optimize the format alternatives in order to minimize legacy subscriber erosion and maximize new subscriber acquisition. Oliver Wyman simulated various future options in order to isolate the various elements of the offer design, optimize the relaunch, and quantify the impact on newsstand sales and subscriptions. The resulting relaunch with an optimized, redesigned offer resulted in 40% growth in newsstand sales and lower than expected legacy subscriber erosion.
