Why Oliver Wyman?
I was attracted by Oliver Wyman’s reputation in financial services and the opportunity to travel both within one’s main geography and globally. However, the one distinguishing factor that set the firm apart was clearly its fun and laid-back culture as embodied by the people I met on campus and throughout the interview process.
Real Work, Right Away
I was assigned real responsibilities right on my first project in which we were supporting a large Canadian bank’s market risk group. They had to comply with new Basel requirements and prepare a submission to the national regulator under tight deadlines. I was very quickly expected to get up to speed on content, participate in working sessions with the client team, fully own standalone deliverables, and present them to senior clients. This was all in just a few months after joining the firm.
The Partner and manager of my first project had a strong impact on me. They helped me actually improve my performance beyond simply delivering what was asked. The level of investment, encouragement and trust manifested during my first six months at the firm was extremely helpful and appreciated from a fresh hire’s perspective. The firm has a strong commitment to training and self-education (through sponsorship of CFA/FRM exams, language courses, etc.). It is also nice that the Talent Managers really try to match consultant preferences and development needs in staffing decisions (though not always possible especially when utilization is running hot). For example, after experiencing difficulties obtaining a US visa, I was offered to work in EMEA to address my lack of travel until my visa issue was resolved.
Outside of Client Work
I like being able to travel to interesting destinations on the job. Some of the cities I have had the chance to visit while on projects include Riyadh, Beirut, Dubai, Bermuda, London, Paris, New York and San Francisco. When in Toronto, we often organize various social or charity events and try to have weekly happy hours either outside or in the office, where we take advantage of our ping pong table. I also enjoy salsa dancing and playing guitar casually.
