Why Oliver Wyman?
As I approached the end of my undergrad years I was looking for a job that would provide a steep learning curve in a fun environment – I found Oliver Wyman to be exactly that. Prior to joining I had interned with The Walt Disney Company, worked with non-profits, worked for Apple Inc. and started my own cake ball company. I was attracted to Oliver Wyman by the opportunity to pursue interesting and impactful work across industries and geographies alongside a diverse group of intelligent and kind-hearted people.
I came into consulting barely able to type lists in excel and within a year found myself creating tools and models that delivered value to our clients. I’m constantly amazed by how much the consultants at our firm develop in such a short time under OW’s apprenticeship model. In addition to the support we get from our project teams, we also have Career Advisors who track our career progression. My Advisor has been an incredible mentor to me from the day I started. We check in regularly to talk about my career goals, office events and anything else that may be going on in our lives. Though incredibly busy, she always makes our chats and my development a priority.
My position at Oliver Wyman has taught me not to fear ambiguity and has developed my confidence in charting a path forward. I feel as though there’s nothing I can’t do… just things I haven’t yet learned. I’m impressed by my peers and friends at OW who challenge my own perspectives and provide unique view points on a multitude of different issues.
Outside of client work
I’m a chapter leader for EMPOWERED, our racial and ethnic diversity employee resource group (ERG), and I’m actively involved with WOW (our women’s ERG). I also enjoy participating in team sports with fellow office members (soccer, cycling, softball), serving as an advisor for the Dallas office’s donor advised fund (the 4400 Fund), assisting with our campus recruiting efforts, serving as a buddy to more junior consultants and planning community service events.
Our ERGs are one of my favorite aspects of the firm – from the moment I started I felt as though I was able to be heavily involved in shaping our firm’s initiatives and create a positive impact on our organization. I’ve also met incredible people across multiple different offices through my involvement and have participated in a lot of fun events including an International Wine and Cheese Night, Bollywood Movie Night, Women’s Brunch, Halloween Carnival Volunteer Day and the EMPOWERED offsite in Chicago.
More broadly, my consulting career has provided an incredible avenue to be engaged and involved in the Dallas community. Since moving to Dallas and beginning my career, I’ve coordinated volunteer efforts with Feed the City, Vogel Alcove, Dallas Heart Walk, Girls Inc., and Hearts and Hammers so that members of our office (and those of our sister companies) can spend time together serving the community along with family and friends. Small events like these help create the great culture we have at our firm.
