Katrina - CONSULTANT

Career PathI joined Oliver Wyman straight out of university, after seriously considering a number of possible career paths, including foreign affairs, investment banking, teaching and curatorship. I was drawn to consulting by the opportunity to gain diverse experiences and high levels of senior exposure early on in my career. Oliver Wyman differentiated itself based on its flat structure and focus on bringing real value to clients.

I now consider myself to be a professional problem solver, helping clients with the questions that matter most. Since joining, managers and partners have consistently given me the chance to “step-up” by creating opportunities to present at final client presentations with senior stakeholders and to run client meetings. I have had to develop and grow quickly to keep up with the pace of opportunity!

International FocusPart of what drew me to the firm was the promise of global travel and Oliver Wyman delivered from Day One. After spending two weeks in London for New Consultant Toolkit training, I had one day in Sydney before being packed off to Malaysia for a six week insurance strategy project! Thereafter, I worked across three Australian cities, followed by a corporate strategy project in Indonesia and then onto a performance management case in Thailand. Working across cultures has been very rewarding from a professional perspective, and then there is the weekend travel …camping on the active volcano Krakatau, cycling the Golden Triangle in northern Thailand, and sky-bar hoping in the metropolises of South East Asia, to name a few!

Outside of Client WorkOliver Wyman places a lot of value on firm building and contribution. Alongside my day job as a consultant, I am also the Chief of Staff of the APR Core Consultant Group (which is all of the consultants not aligned with a practice group in the Asia Pacific Region, generally those in their first 3 years at the firm). We speak on a monthly basis to share project experiences, engage in discussion with partners and alumni, and to address the issues that matter most to us as consultants. Each year we also work on a number of initiatives, allowing us to contribute to the firm and craft it into the company we want it to be.

I am also the Sydney chapter representative for WOW (Women at Oliver Wyman, our employee resource group). I have organized engagement sessions and guest speakers. Most recently I participated in reverse mentoring with the APR partner group, which enabled the partners to hear first-hand the experiences of women at the firm.
