Why Oliver WymanIt might sound clichéd – however it was ‘people’ that did it for me. The Oliver Wyman presentation stood out amongst all the other firms that presented on campus. For once everyone spoke and not just the most senior Partner. The open and friendly vibe clearly revealed a truly flat structure. It was one of the key parameters for me as I decided between the two firms I interviewed with. I believe one of the best things about the firm (especially in growing markets like APR) is that I am constantly provided with guidance, support and mentorship to shape my career. The Partners and principals continuously invest in me to make sure I find my way within the firm and in various client situations.
Real work, right awayMy first project was for one of the largest insurance and asset management companies in India. On my very first project, I was directly interacting and presenting sections of my work to clients. Although the content area was technical and required me to quickly come up to speed with modeling techniques and statistical analyses, everyone on the team went out of their way to make sure I was given enough support. Since then, OW has given me the right stretch opportunities, at various points in my career, which have helped me evolve professionally.
MentorsOne of the greatest contributions the firm has provided me is mentors that will last me a lifetime! My Career Development Advisor has been my pillar of strength and has given me guidance and support ever since I joined. He provides constant direction from the smallest things (e.g. phone etiquette) to larger skill sets I need to develop (e.g. client presentations). Another Partner has taken an active interest in my career and is my champion within the firm. He helps me find the right project opportunities, provides regular honest feedback and also pushes me to contribute beyond project work. Lastly, one of my early managers has also had a huge impact on my career. I worked with her on 2 projects very early in my tenure and on various firm-building activities after that. Her energy level and commitment to the firm are a constant source of inspiration. She consistently lends an ear to my challenges and relays solid advice which has held me in good stead.
Outside of client workThere are a variety of things I enjoy doing beyond project work. I have helped drive the recruitment efforts for India and am part of the WOW (Women of Oliver Wyman) team wherein I actively participate in diversity discussions and drive reverse mentoring in the firm. As a member of the Knowledge Champion team, I assist in developing the firm’s knowledge service initiatives for the local offices. Outside of OW, I do volunteer work with an NGO, Akanksha, as a part-time teacher on weekends, teaching Maths and Science.
