I was drawn to Oliver Wyman by the opportunity to build a broad skill set, be exposed to new business and cultural environments, and make an impact – all at an early stage of my career. I was impressed by the variety of backgrounds of people at the firm, which enriched the firm’s culture and demonstrated how OW values diversity in thinking. But the distinguishing factor for me was the firm’s people.
During the recruiting process, one consultant who I met at a career fair really took the initiative to give me specific advice, keep in touch during the whole recruiting process and even help me prepare for final rounds. That gave me a sense of what a supportive environment OW is and how caring and collaborative the colleagues are.
Oliver Wyman helped me to pursue a strong interest in international development by sponsoring a 3-month fellowship with Women’s World Banking working with their partner microfinance institution in Amman, Jordan. The institution, Microfund for Women, provides loans to low-income women across Jordan to build their own businesses and achieve financial independence. I’m a big believer in helping people and organizations to build capabilities to help themselves. The skills and approaches I learned through consulting equipped me to do that and have a much bigger impact than I ever could have otherwise. You can read more about my work in Jordan on this blog.
My first project was especially intimidating as I was by far the most junior member of the team. My role was to provide analysis and create decision-making tools to support four work streams in the operational transformation of a professional services firm. Quickly, I became the hub of the project and the go-to person for information, for both our internal team and for the client. It was exciting to see the results I produced being used directly to make decisions on how to reorganize the business. Subsequently, I helped the client hire and train three full-time business analysts to take over my role and carry on the initiatives we started, which shows how the work we do can have a lasting impact.
